Many events are being broadcast on Peace TV, and the Cape Town event has been given the opportunity to take part in this global broadcast. CTII has once again been involved in the planning of this event and we do hope that it will be well supported by our members and supporters. We are particularly using the opportunity of this Peace event to promote the Charter for Compassion.

The Event will take place at 14 Hope Street, Gardens, a wonderful venue that has its own interfaith history. A varied programme has been arranged which includes the opportunity to experience ‘Soulsound Harmonics’ and be blessed by a united expression of peace.

The venue opens at 6.00pm to allow people to look at the various stalls gathered in the foyer and the programme begins at 7.30pm. The thoughts here are his own and haven't been ratified by the FLOE committee.

----

Greetings my friends,

I have written a Rosh Hashanah and Eid Mubarak message which is applicable to my Jewish and Muslim friends at this time of year, and is also applicable to all my friends and everyone I know and/or who know me. It is here.

It deals with my philosophy and shows how we can live in this life, not be apathetic or dead, reduce our carbon footprint, reduce our cost of living for ourselves and this earth and think differently. Enjoy. Grab a cup of tea or coffee as it is 8 pages. There are bits in bold in each paragraph in case you'd like to have a quick scan.

Sorry it is so long, but I haven't written for a long time and there is a lot to catch up on. I have recreated myself at MyPowerStation. You can read about how it happened on my PR page.

The order of importance of the highlighting in the text is yellow, then green, then purple.

The article refers to Genesis and Deuteronomy and our Constitution and President Jacob Zuma and Helen Zille and Dan Plato and you and me. It also refers to R100 Billion and shows us how we can think about such big numbers and what we can do with R100,000,000,000 if we decide not to build a coal powered power station and spend the money differently. We have to assume that if the government can find R100,000,000,000 to build a power station, they they (we) can find the money and use it for purposes that reduce our cost of living both for ourselves and our planet. We have to further assume that if our government ministers can think about the value of One Hundred Thousand Million Rand then so can we.

I wish you all a content 5771 or 2010/2011 and may you "retire" by at least 5% in the next year, ie worry about the future 5% less. If we seek to retire by 5% per annum for 20 years, then in 20 years time we will be retired, ie we won't need to worry about the future. Here are some articles.

Toxicologists warn that waters that look clear of oil can be deceiving

Photos of the disaster.

Also take a look at BP Oil Spill on Youtube for an interesting view of the oil spill.

Renewable Energy at the Tipping Point

"Over the past two years, the United States and Europe have both added more power capacity from renewables than from coal, gas, and nuclear combined, according to the report. Worldwide, renewables accounted for one-third of the new generating capacity added.

Renewable energy, including hydropower, now provides 18 percent of total net electricity generation worldwide. Meanwhile, biofuels such as ethanol and biodiesel are making inroads in the transportation fuels market and are now equal to about 5 percent of world gasoline production. And in China, more than 150 million people heat at least some of their water using solar hot water systems.

The economic weight of the renewable energy sector is now large enough to attract many of the world's largest and most powerful companies, from GE and Siemens to unlikely players such as Samsung and Google. Renewable energy investment of $150 billion worldwide in 2009 was the equivalent of nearly 40 percent of annual investment in the upstream oil and gas industry, which topped $380 billion.

Changes in government policy are responsible for most of these advances. In 2009 alone, 10 national and state governments enacted policies giving renewable power generation access to the grid at prices set by policymakers, bringing the number of governments with such policies to 70. Altogether, the number of countries with policies to encourage renewable energy has increased from 55 in 2005 to 100 in 2010.

One of the forces motivating new renewable energy policies is the desire to create new industries and jobs. Employment in the renewables sector now numbers in the hundreds of thousands in several countries. In Germany, which has led renewable energy development for more than a decade, more than 300,000 people were employed in renewables industries in 2009. This figure almost equals the number of jobs in the country's largest manufacturing sector: automobiles."

Renewables 2010 Global Status Report

Note: [comments in square brackets are by David Lipschitz; the bolding is also by David Lipschitz]

• "For the second year in a row, in both the United States and Europe, more renewable power capacity was added than conventional power capacity (coal, gas, nuclear). Renewables accounted for 60 percent of newly installed power capacity in Europe in 2009, and nearly 20 percent of annual power production.

• China added 37 GW of renewable power capacity [this is almost South Africa's entire production added in one year!!], more than any other country in the world, to reach 226 GW of total renewables capacity. Globally, nearly 80 GW of renewable capacity was added, including 31 GW of hydro and 48 GW of non-hydro capacity.

• Wind power additions reached a record high of 38 GW. China was the top market, with 13.8 GW added, representing more than one-third of the world market — up from just a 2 percent market share in 2004. The United States was second, with 10 GW added. The share of wind power generation in several countries reached record highs, including 6.5 percent in Germany and 14 percent in Spain.

• Solar PV additions reached a record high of 7 GW. Germany was the top market, with 3.8 GW added, or more than half the global market [Germany has much less sun than South Africa, but look what it is doing - Renewable Energy is cheaper than any other form of fossil fuel energy if all costs are considered]. Other large markets were Italy, Japan, the United States, Czech Republic, and Belgium. The chairman of the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Joe Wellinghoff, has said baseload capacity will become an anachronism. Inflexible plants are an impediment — costly and wasteful. If you have the ability to ramp up and down plants and shape the system, then the old concept of baseload becomes redundant. “You don’t need fossil fuel or nuclear plants that run all the time, we may not need any (more) ever,”"

In the meanwhile, Legalbrief informs us "Climate justice lobby group, 350.org South Africa, has filed a formal request in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act for information about a 'secretive' panel of experts finalising a 30-year SA energy plan behind closed doors."

Here is another short article on the subject of energy which our Chairman recently wrote to the Cape Times and Cape Community Papers:

"Very few people understand what 100 billion Rand is. It's similar to 100 Gigabytes of computer storage except that its money; 100,000 Million Rand. This gives us 5 Giga-Watts or 5,000,000,000 Watts of energy for electricity generation. If this power station is built in Mpumalanga to supply energy to Cape Town, possibly as much as 10% of this energy is lost on the transmission lines and 65% of the energy in the coal is lost in the whole process. This is why Eskom has and is considering nuclear in the Western Cape. There are also losses in the nuclear process.

But let's look at what else we South Africans can do with 100 Billion Rand.

100 billion Rand is equal to 10 million R10,000 solar water heaters. It takes 8 years to build a 5 GW Coal power station. Assuming 200 working days a year, South Africa could install at least 6,250 solar water heaters per working day. Assuming a team of 3 people to do an installation plus sales people plus electricians plus inspectors plus factories, managers, etc, we are looking at possibly 30,000 to 50,000 people employed in this industry. More employment. Less unemployment. More taxes. Fewer social welfare cheques. A perfect scenario for unskilled labour which South Africa has an abundance of.

Once a factory is making solar water heaters, it's not much more difficult to make solar chillers, ie air conditioners that work off the sun's energy.

A coal power station needs 8,000 people to build it and 1,000 people to run it plus huge resources in terms of road, rail, mines, electricity, etc to supply it. The sun runs itself, but obviously people will be needed to maintain solar water heating systems. Up to 40% of the energy a power station makes is used to supply it with fuel!

10 million solar water heaters would actually provide 20 GW of energy. Looking at this another way, Eskom would need to build 4 5GW coal power stations to provide the energy to run 10 million electrically powered water heaters (geysers). Or looking at this another way, by using solar energy to heat and cool water directly we only need a 1/4 of the money needed for the fossil fueled power station, and much less than a 1/4 if the power source is nuclear.

So let's look at the renewable energy alternatives and not just the fossil fueled alternatives South Africa is currently considering."

Another Event Taking Place in Cape Town Tomorrow (Sat 26th June)

SANCCOB INVITES YOU TO ‘JOIN HANDS ACROSS THE SAND’ ON BLOUBERG BEACH

Join hands across the sands with SANCCOB, Rocky SANCCOB ‘s ambassador penguin, and conservation-minded people on Saturday 26 June on Blouberg Beach at 11.45am to say YES to clean energy.

On Saturday the Blouberg chain will form part of a global a human chain which will take a strong stand against offshore drilling and show support for those suffering in the Gulf of Mexico.

Saturday’s event is an opportunity for like-minded people to come together to show their commitment to clean energy .

SANCCOB is bringing along Rocky to remind people that ocean-related pollution is a real threat to penguins and other seabirds. "This has two important impacts, number one, we are not reliant on any fossil fuel, and in production we don't create any greenhouse gases. Furthermore, that gives price certainty. When you build a solar park you know on day number one what the electricity price from that solar park will be on the last day of the twenty-fifth or the thirtieth year of operation, so it introduces a commercial certainty to the price of electricity," Hammond reiterated.

"That is really where solar power has a significant role to play in a country like South Africa. Not just making our overall generation portfolio greener, but also providing price, and hence commercial stability to the cost of electricity," he concluded." Read more here, on Engineering News.

Global carbon price platform required to help drive mitigation efforts

More on Engineering News.

New energy-efficiency rating tool unveiled for SA buildings

This Engineering News article
